The TSG1001 Programmable TV Generator and SDP1000 Signal Development Package provide a versatile system for definition and generation of commonly used and new television signals. Newly created signals or signals from the SDP1000 libraries can be quickly downloaded to the TSG1001 and output through analog and parallel digital outputs. The signals are generated either with an internal clock, or with a user-supplied clock. Downloaded signals are saved when the generator is off.

In addition to conventional static test signals, the TSG1001 provides moving signals for testing complex image-processing electronics such as bit rate reduction and motion-compensation equipment. The SDP1000 libraries contain simple patterns for basic testing needs. The TSG1001's programmable zone-plate generator provides complex patterns for advanced testing requirements; fixed- and swept-frequency horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and temporal patterns allow true multidimensional testing.

Test Signal Generator

The TSG1001 provides signals in GBR, YPBPR, and composite NTSC formats. Precision digital signal generation ensures the accuracy and stability of the test signals. The high sampling rates and new Tektronix digital-to-analog converters provide 10-bit signals with 30-MHz bandwidth on all three channels. This allows full bandwidth testing of HDTV systems and extended bandwidth testing for NTSC and lower-bandwidth analog component systems. Two analog outputs are available for each channel. Parallel digital outputs are also provided to allow the TSG1001 to interface directly into digital systems that are clock rate compatible. The PSC1125 may be used to provide 1.485 GBps serial component test signals.

SDP1000 Signal Development Package

The SDP1000 is a personal computer-based software tool for development of custom test signals for the TSG1001 Programmable Generator. The SDP1000 provides facilities for the editing of existing waveforms, creation of new waveforms, and the building of files needed to download signals from the personal computer to the generator.

Zone Plate Generator - For the more complex testing needs, a fully programmable zone-plate generator is included. All horizontal, vertical, and temporal components may be set to a single frequency or swept over a user-defined frequency range and time interval. Factory preset zone-plate patterns include horizontal, vertical, and diagonal fixed-frequency patterns and horizontal, vertical, and circular sweep patterns. A temporal component may be added to any of the patterns. User-defined patterns may be easily programmed and saved in nonvolatile storage.

The two main parts of the SDP1000 are the waveform editor and the download file generator. The waveform editor provides command line menus and online help screens to simplify operation. The editor graphics provide a display of all or individual channels of the waveform, amplitude, and timing information, and the help function keys. The download file generator uses the test-signal files created by the waveform editor to build the files needed to download a test signal or group of test signals into the generator. Download files are provided for portions of and, in some cases, the entire library for all factory-provided test-signal libraries.

An external clock signal may be used in conjunction with the SDP1000 to define and generate test signals at arbitrary line and field rates. Note that the PSC1125 is supplied with a custom signal set not supported by the SDP1000.

SDP1000 Requirements

Hardware - The SDP1000 will run on an IBM PC AT, or compatible. Minimum requirements: 640-K memory, 1 floppy disk, 1 hard disk; CGA, EGA, VGA, or HERCULES graphics adaptor. For best program execution speed, a 386 with a math coprocessor is highly recommended.

Software - IBM PC DOS or MS-DOS versions 3.0 or higher.

Test and Operating Facilities

The TSG1001 provides several, highly useful test and operational features. These include the front-panel display, a multifunction control knob, a programmable trigger function, a picture-monitor menu display, channel on/off switches, and remote control operation.

The vacuum fluorescent front-panel display provides complete information on the generator operating status, including:

  • Signal set selected
  • Test signal selected
  • Current scan rate and output format
  • Pedestal level
  • Cursor position, which determines the point in the raster where the programmable trigger will be generated

The front-panel display follows selections made with the front-panel push buttons, the control knob, or through the remote control ports.

The multifunction control knob provides a subordinate control function to the front-panel push button controls. These include:

  • Signal set selection
  • Test signal selection of signals nested under a single front-panel selector
  • Selection of scan rate and output format
  • Control of pedestal level
  • Positioning of the cursors which set the programmable trigger point
  • Up/down scrolling through the menu display

The TSG1001 provides a new programmable trigger function. When this function is selected, horizontal and vertical cursors are superimposed on the picture-monitor display of the selected test signal. A trigger pulse is generated coincident with the point indicated by the cursors' intersection. This pulse can be used to trigger an oscilloscope for examining distortions introduced by signal processing equipment.

The cursor function can also be used as a frame rate clock to trigger a digitizer. This provides a simple means for observing the temporal performance of signal processing equipment.

The picture-monitor menu display function provides a listing of all of the test signals nested under each signal select button. When this function is activated, the menu replaces the test-signal output with a full field text display of all test signals nested under the current signal select button. A carat indicates which of the nested signals is currently selected. Rotation of the front-panel knob causes the cursor to scroll through the test-signal list. When the menu function is released, the signal last indicated by the cursor will appear at the test-signal outputs.

The channel on/off switches control individual channel output and are useful in determining channel-to-channel crosstalk characteristics.

All front-panel operations including the multifunction knob may be duplicated through the ground closure or RS-232 ports.
